PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE: A disappointing turnout for the first meeting of the new year saw just around sixty percent of the thirty plus members of the Planning for the Future Group attend the meeting held in the GAA Rooms on Tuesday evening. In the chairperson Fr. Flavins review the Communications, Hall Painting and the Christmas Morning social entertainment Groups were lauded as they led the way by a distance in the actual activities carried out by the various sub groups. Elsewhere there was no timelines for the widening of the gate into the Church Car Park, the provision of the boundary maps of the hall site, the tidying up of commercial roadside properties or on the other maintenance and development works that were short listed around the village and wider parish area. Amongst the items added to the “to do” list were the provision of proper lighting for the steps at the entrance to the hall, the possible organization of a Hall caretaker and Calendar of activities in it and also work on the internal lighting. Repairing the flat roof at the church and sorting out the drainage around it were also added. Amongst the positive outcomes were the proposition to hold a survey amongst parents of the young children of the parish on the possible provision of a playground and the offer of the installation of a fifty metre pathway free of charge by a local contractor to link the Car Park at the lake to the Amenity Walk and thereby resolve the recently identified anomalies. In addition Barbette Conalty has volunteered to represent the group at the upcoming leader Training Programmes. On the financial front the figures of the costs of the creation of the Parish Website windgap.ie and the painting and maintenance work to the hall are outstanding. The next meeting of the group takes place at the end of February in the GAA Club Rooms.

SCHOOL NEWS: In recent weeks on the school blog Jack Hayes related “This week we are back to school and really excited but disappointed about the homework. We did a project on The Butlers of Ormond and we were presenting them to the whole class. We are really getting stuck into practising for peace proms. The show is in 6 weeks in the Hub Kilkenny. 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th are starting swimming lessons next week in the Watershed and are really excited. We really want to know when all the school sports are starting because we are dying to get outside again. The nurse is coming next Monday for hearing and sight tests”. The following week Kalle Young added “This week we have a former pupil, Jaime Phelan, at our school on work experience from St Brigid's School in Callan. On Monday we had no electricity or heating because we had a burst pipe but the nurse came and did eye and hearing tests. On Tuesday the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th classes went to The Watershed on their first swimming lesson of the year. They were very well behaved. On Wednesday, the Infants and Sonas went on a winter nature walk and brought their magnifying glasses. They brought back lots of examples of nature. Also on Wednesday, we had a substitute teacher, Ms Doyle. This month's edition of The Primary Planet magazine arrived. It has lots of national and international news. We found out that the Credit Union quiz will be held on February 4th. We have to be on our best behaviour if we want to be picked to represent Windgap NS at the quiz.
