SENIOR CAMOGIE: Heavy fog on the lower ground, opened out to bright sunshine and a dew covered pitch as both Windgap and the Rower Inistioge gathered in Mullianavat on Sunday morning for their most important match of the year, the senior relegation final. From the outset, it was obvious the importance of the occasion, with the large support that attended from both sides and the intensity of the warm up. In the game that saw both defences on top, a great battle ensued between two well committed sides. From the throw in free taker Kelly Hamilton led the way and had the Rower Inistioge 0-3 to 0-1 ahead after nine minutes. The first major score came when Niamh Bambrick was on hand to knock in a parried shot from Anne Marie Phelan for a Windgap goal. With further Windgap points from Denise Gaule frees and a 65 her side was 1-4 to 0-3 ahead after fifteen minutes. A point in reply by Kelly Hamilton reduced the lead to a single score 1-4 to 0-4 as the game remained scoreless for the remainder of the half with the highlight being a brave body save by the Windgap fullback. Straight from the throw in, the game was turned on its head when the Rower Inistioges Christine Lyng doubled on a long high range free to rattle the Windgap net. The score tied the scores at 1-4 apiece. Re-juvenated the Noresiders took a single point lead, and through more Kelly Hamilton frees and a 65 went on to lead 1-7 to 1-5 twenty minutes of the second half. With the game flowing from end to end and both sides having chances, a great run by substitute Caoimhe OShea opened up the Rower Inistioge defence and saw Niamh Bambrick with a goal put Windgap 2-5 to 1-7 ahead with just ten minutes to go. For the remainder of the game, it was nail biting action as player of the match fullback Mickeala Kenealley ably assisted by centre back Catherine Foley and goalkeeper Laura Walker led the defence of their teams slim lead. During the final period that, saw waves of Rower attacks, many close shaves and one ball fly just inches past the right hand post the side hung out to maintain their senior status for another year.
