Windgap Tullahought Notes March 17th with Jimmy Walsh
TOP ENTREPRENUERS: Local teenager David Doyle of Curragh is part of the Carrick-on-Suir CBS Transition Year group that has stormed its way to the top of the young entrepreneur’s scene recently. Along with Michael Phelan from Carrick on Suir and Jack O’Sullivan from Faugheen their Welly Racks and Jacks project has won the Tipperary Enterprise award in the L.I.T. in Clonmel and the “Best Quality Product at the Kilkenny Enterprise “Get up and Go” competition held in the Springhill Hotel. Both awards have seen them progress to the respective National Finals in Dublin and in Croke Park in May. Their Welly Racks and Jacks made from both steel and timber also saw their appearance in the National Final of the Dragons Den in the Matter hotel in Dublin. Created as a result of their agricultural background observances the Welly Racks in timber and steel have been designed to store everyone’s outdoor accessory both safely and dryly whilst the Jacks assist in the removal of the wellington after the days work. Since their start up in September the team have sold them at farmers markets, post offices, banks and co-op stores and have gone worldwide via their website www.wellyracksandjacks.weebly.com and on Facebook on wellyracksandjacks. The transition year team in the school is led by Miss Majella Gleeson with support from the county enterprise coordinator Joanne O Donnell. Amongst the many skills involved in there production are design, cutting, welding and painting the steel, with similar skills on the wooden equivalents. In addition the successful learning curve has included IT, Finance, marketing and sales. Since Christmas the enterprising group have extended their product range from the left over materials to create Hurley Racks in green, blue, red and any other club or county colour that is required. RANGERS SHOW THE WAY: The first competitive game of last year was recalled over the weekend as Windgaps opposition Mount Leinster Rangers lined out in the All Ireland Senior Hurling Club Final in Croke Park on St. Patricks Day. Fifty one weeks earlier they had travelled to Windgap to play in the All County Junior Hurling League where they recorded a single 0-16 to 2-9 win over the home side. As they made the fairy-tale journey to the hallowed ground on Jones road, Windgap collected their fourth Southern Championship. The new year’s campaign commenced locally with a challenge against Dicksboro in Palmerstown on Saturday. Having started well the home side took the spoils as the full tarvelling panel got a run out. SPRING IN THE AIR: After the onset of the milder weather one of the church based family of red admiral butterflies awoke from his winter slumber. On Sunday morning it was to be seen making tentative steps to seek out the suns rays on the lighter coloured panels of the stain glass window in St Nicholas Church in Tullahought. The following day for the celebration of St Patrick it was in full flight visiting most of the ten globe shaped lights as it flitted about from one window to another. Close by another member was making the slow climb up the leaded glass towards the brighter light and warmer position in another window on the rising sun side of the Church. Outside a rosy red crop of berries still appearing on the ornamental holly tree was a reflection of the milder and not so hungry winter as the smaller clumps of shamrock on display were delayed in their growth by the wetter months... JUNIOR CLUB: At junior club last Friday we made use of the dry weather and brought the older children to the tennis courts to do an obstacle course and a number of games whilst the younger children did similar activities in the hall with equipment from Kilkenny Sports & Recreation Partnership. A large number of the children had a craft session with Liz and made very colourful cheerleading pom poms for St Patricks Day whilst Orlaith O Shea introduced us to a very lively game of octopus! Junior Club resumes again Friday 28th March For further details contact windgapyouth@gmail.com ALL IRELAND HANDBALL: Long journeys on Saturday for the All Ireland juveniles handball semi finals between Ulster and Leinster saw David Doyle and Mark Purcell of Clogh travel to Beragh in County Tyrone to play in the Boys U17 doubles whilst his clubmate Margaret Purcell and Kim Ryan visited the Orchard County to contest Girls U15 Doubles. On the day they found Tyrone’s Aaron Owens and Tiarnan McCrystall and Armagh’s Meabh McCambridge and Beth Doris too strong. FOOTBALL: In Kilmacow on Saturday evening the local side went down to the home side by 3-4 to 2-0 in the Duggan Steel under fourteen football league. The fourth fixture of the league the side had recorded a win over Tullaroan in Tullaroan the previous weekend and had received walkovers in the other two rounds. The side is looked after by David McCoy and Davy Pat O'Brien. UNSOCIABLE BEHAVIOUR: After a week without break ins more instances took place in isolated houses and in nearby villages over the past few days. The events have kept this feared and most unwanted item on the top of the local agenda for far too long. Thought to be a local or regionalised issue it was discussed as a major issue at National level on the steps of the Hogan Stand on Sunday. Sadly it was stated by a staunch Carlow man that not everyone who wished top travel to see Mount Leinster Rangers on their All Ireland trip to Croke Park could attend owing to the fear of robberies whilst their homes and property would be left unprotected. RACING MICE: A major novel fundraiser for "Windgap Community projects" is planned for the Auld House, Killamery on March 22nd 2014. For the first time mouse racing comes to that end of the parish.
