After 21 days of attention from Hugh, Jack & Seán, the incubating eggs began to hatch. By Monday evening we had 5 chicks and by end of school on Tuesday we had 13. Five eggs have not yet hatched. Hugh's Mam & Dad, Breda & Trevor, called on Monday to install a 'nursery' and infra red lamp in the classroom.
What excitement the chicks have created! The 5th & 6th classroom has become the first stop off point for most pupils in the morning as they call to admire the new arrivals and comment on their progress. The chicks have so far survived the attention of 95 children & have even been heard chirping louder than the children's singing at choir practice! We will be sad to see them leave the school on Wednesday, but Hugh will be keeping an eye on them for us in their new home. As one set of chicks 'leave the nest', we look forward to welcoming back our pupils who have already 'flown the coop' at the school's 50th anniversary celebrations on Friday. Activities begin with the planting of a new cherry tree at 12 o'c. The school will then be open from 2 - 5 pm to welcome all past pupils, staff and parishioners to relive their memories. At 5.30 pm, mass will be celebrated by Fr Flavin in St Nicholas' Church. This mass will also mark the graduation of our 10 students who are moving on to secondary school. And so the circle of life continues!
