Windgap let rip

In Rice Park on Sunday, resurgent Windgap carried too much powder for a hard-trying Carrickshock in a junior hurling ‘B’ game that was very ordinary.

Windgap opened in whirlwind fashion and had five unanswered points on the ’board by the 7th minute. They enhance their position with some 14 points registered by the break.

Carrickshock could muster but four such scores in response. With Peter Hennessy and William Phelan dominating proceedings at midfield, life for the Carrickshock forwards was tough - there simply was never enough ball to work with.

On the contra side, the Windgap forwards could not fail to impress, such was the frequency and quality of ball enjoyed. Consequently the likes of Steven Purcell, Michael Power, Gary Lyons, Tom Lonergan were bush running up scores.

The second half was a facsimile of the first with no let up in the supply going Windgap’s way. In fact a candidate for goal of the year was flashed to the net by Pauric Walsh, who came from nowhere to double on a cross, hip high, to the net from a superbly struck cross shot from Michael Power.

Carrickshock did get a late consolation goal from Seanie gibbons, but its scopring only served as a respectability conduit to a fast decreasing cause.

Nial Walsh was an excellent goalkeeper for Windgap. Pa Moore, Shane WalshDarragh O’Shea, and Eddie Cunningham were excellent, and the rest have already been mentioned.

For Carrickshock, they had capable triers in Eamonn Phelan, Nicky Murphy, Tommy Hearne, Dan O’Brien, Seanie Gibbons, and Larry O’Shea.

Scorers: Windgap - Pauric Walsh (1-2); Peter Hennessy (0-4, two 65s’);Tom Lonergan (0-4, two frees); Gary Lyons (0-2, one free); William Phelan, Paul McKenna (0-2 each); Ger Purcell (0-1, free);Steven Purcell, Paul Comerford (0-1 each). Carrickshock - Dan O’Brien (0-4, one free); Seanie Gibbons (1-0); Tommy Hearne (0-1, 65): Larry
O’Shea (0-1).
