VILLAGE FORGE TO RETURN: Carlow Kilkenny Education and Training Board are organising a Stone Building Project to do a re-construction of the front wall of the old forge in Windgap. Synonymous for generations with the Walsh family, the iconic photo of John Walsh shoeing a white horse in the unique cut-stone horseshoe shaped doorway helped secure the project from a long list of applications. To re-create the building of the past there are vacancies for eight volunteers who would like to learn the art of a stone mason under the watchful eye of master stone mason Seamus Davis. The project which will commence in three to four weeks will run on ten Saturdays from 9am to 3 or 4pm. To apply for a place call 087 9728344 or 087 7875501 as soon as possible. Thanks are extended to all who have provided sandstone, limestone corners and window sills for the work. Also to those who have offered machinery for clearing the site and excavating the foundations and for providing templates for the arch and windows. Additional limestone corner stones for the arch would be greatly appreciated to complete the project which is being organised by the Windgap Community Development Committee.
