IT’S ALL OVER: A quiet event on the ground with a great turnout was how the General Election was described in the locality, as voting took place at the polling stations in Tullahought Community Centre and Windgap National School. In Windgap a very impressive turnout of 79.5% was recorded as the figures on the voting register dropped from 310 to 250 following the changes that saw Cuaile, Killamery and Cotterstown move to the Kilkenny West local government area. In Tullahought the figures on the register that takes in parts of the surrounding parishes fell in line with the on-going population decline to 208 with the turnout at 74.5% again well above the national average. A feature of both polling stations was the absence of a number of deceased members of the community, who in their time had played their democratic part in many elections, stretching back through the times of Church gate rallies to almost the foundation of the state. It also included a much larger number of young people that now reside far away from home, that remain on the register with the hope that they will be back the next time. With fifteen candidates in the field, the three week run in to voting day was all about resources with only the major parties running an extensive postering and canvassing campaign in the locality.
