DEBT WORRIES WEARING YOU DOWN Kilkenny MABS is concerned with the difficulties being faced by many people with mortgage and debt issues. Anyone affected by debt should not ignore the matter but seek help as early as possible and this may alleviate the stress and social difficulties associated with debt. New clients to the service have less than 10 days to wait for a new appointment. Kilkenny Money Advice and Budgeting Service (MABS) are now offering a free intermediary service to assess people for Debt Relief Notices (DRN). A Debt Relief Notice is one of the options for dealing with debt under the Personal Insolvency Act 2012. Staff at Kilkenny MABS have a new role under the act as Approved Intermediaries with The Insolvency Service of Ireland and can administer these DRN’s. The Insolvency Service of Ireland has waived any fee applicable for a DRN. MABS are also involved in a new voluntary code for dealing with debts with a number of banks. The concept of debt settlement is recognised by Banking Payments Federation of Ireland and MABS as central to this protocol. Debt settlement is accepting payment that may be less than the full amount of the debt owed in respect of unsecured debt and final settlement of that debt. Kilkenny MABS is a Free, Confidential and Independent Service funded through CIB.
