Grandparents Day

Grandparents' Day

The pupils of Scoil San Nioclás were delighted to welcome their grandparents, from near and far, to our annual celebration, which this year was held in Windgap Church on Wednesday, 17th February. During the celebration the children sang, played and prayed for their grandparents.

Larry and Ann O'Shea held a captive audience as they remembered their childhoods in Windgap and Bagenalstown. Ann recalled her school life, with details like learning to turn the heel on a sock and the risk of getting slapped for talking! Larry told us about his early years growing up in the League House, where the doctor held his surgery in the sitting room one day a week. He also told us of the excitement when electrification came to Windgap.

The children's pictures and projects were on display around the church. They were delighted to tell us about their grandparents' interesting lives. We heard about first dates in Windgap Hall, great hurlers of the past, soldiers involved in combat and housekeeping for the priest.

Grandparents' Day continues to be one of the highlights of our school year. We hope our guests enjoyed this year's gathering as much as we did!

Enrolment

Enrolment forms for children due to start school in September are now available at Scoil San Nioclás (Tel 648321) or on windgapns.ie (under Parent tab).

BADMINTON QUIZ: Tullahought badminton club are holding their annual table quiz in Tullahought Community Centre on Thursday 18th February at 8.30pm.  All are welcome to support in any way Well done to Emer Barron, Ciara and Jack O'Shea and Evan Doyle on great performances in the under eleven County Championships at the weekend.

SPRING HAS SPRUNG: The couple of fine soft days around the commencement of February were greeted with a wide range of wildlife activity. Like a visit to the seaside a murder of crows, black grey and jackdaws gathered on the bank of a free flowing stream as some went for a full immersion, dancing energetically in the water, whilst the gallery on the ban all looked on. It was followed by an energetic drying routine of dispersing the water on the bank before they were ready for a quick flight to a nearby tree to preen out their feathers, as the routine continued all along the stream down below them. Having succeeded in keeping a low profile over the winter months the emergence of a colourful cock pheasant with a brilliantly patterned mottled brown partner and their courting ritual along with that of the blackbirds was remarkable to be seen. Elsewhere rabbits pranced about with the joy of spring lambs as snowdrops, early daffodils and gorse blossom added colour to the well advanced grass margins and lawns.  Despite the lengthening evenings and within a couple of days, snow on the Comeraghs and Slievenamon added a pinch to the air and more contrast to the landscape. For the many feathered friends of all types of tits and finches, dunnock's, robins and a tailless wagtail, bread crumbs, peanuts and the bag of “Start a Calf” have proved a welcome attraction.

CARD DRIVE: Winners at the Hurling Club Progressive twenty five card that was held in Guinans were. 1st with eleven games were John Kenny and Paddy Barron, 2nd prize was won by PJ Barron and Robbie Maher Pat Power and Brian Hickey Raffle winners were Angel Vaughan, Bridget Cotterell, Noel Ryan, Vincent Purcell The next game takes place on the general election  night Friday the 26th February.
