We will also hold a similar raffle after the Cemetery Mass in Tullahought on Thursday, 6th August.
All support would be gratefully appreciated as the fund has recently provided refresher training courses for 70 operators and we have also had the three defibrillators serviced and pads replaced.

Gday

My name is mick willis and I live in Tasmania, australia .I am trying to contact a KENNEDY descendant living in the WINDGAP area.
My wife and I are visiting Ireland in sept and I am looking for a possible KENNEDY ancestor still living in the area or just someone with local knowledge. .My ancestor lived at the area called BLACKBOG outside WINDGAP.

His name was james kennedy b. 1840

I know its a long shot but I am hoping to find the old farm or farm site at BLACKBOG.

Local History: St. Nicolas Church Killamery

While killamery is the location of an early monastic site, it is also home to a much later "Church of Ireland" building. It was built in 1815 funded by a board of first fruits grant.  It was taken out of service  in 1913.  It  was named like so many buildings in the area after St. Nioclas who legend tells us is buried in Jerpoint.

Windgap Notes 20th July

26/7/2015

DOUBLE BILL: A double bill with Mullinavat was the highlight of this weekend’s sporting activities. It opened with the Southern Junior Hurling Championship tie between both clubs in Mullinavat on Sunday evening and finished with a Senior Camogie league Championship tie in Windgap on Monday evening.

HURLERS WIN: In the game where the hurlers played wind assisted into the road goal, the side led by six points 2-9 to 0-6 at the break. Playing well early on the and when the home side goaled as the evening breeze freshened In the final ten minutes it became a game of cat and mouse when the visitors lead was reduced to a single point on a number of occasions. managed to stay ahead by two points at the final whistle. The final stages saw the posts deprive both sides of crucial scores. Facing Slieverue in the first of two clashes in a fortnight’s time on the day Sean Foley led the side from fullback when a vital last minute catch from the last puck out by substitute Eamon Hawe resulted in a free that saw Windgap finish 2-15 to 1-16 ahead.

CAMOGIE WIN: In a cracking game played in dull misty conditions Windgap recorded a rare and nail biting win over Mullinavat. Having led early on, a three goal blitz and a serious injury in the run up to half time changed the scene. Whilst playing against the breeze into the school end Lindgap led through an early goal. A similar score for the visitors following poor defending gave the initative back to Mullinavat. It was followed by a brave save in the Windgap goal by Laura Walker who had then to go off injured. On the resumption another goal by the visitors turned the game on its  head. Just before the break a Deniese gaule Goal from a penalty saw the sides retire with Mullinavat 2-4 to 2-3 ahead. On the resumption a Windgap point levelled the scores. Having taken the lead the home side were unable to press on as a third Mullinavat goal and a series of goalmouth incidents kept the result in doubt. Holding on to a single point lead and under severe pressure a late late point gave the home side 2-10 to 3-5 victory. Whilst the capture of two points was welcome, previous results still sees the team in a potential relegation area with lots of work to do. Present at both games was the parishes new PP. Fr. Fergus Farrell.

NEW JERSEYS: The occasion was marked by the presentation of New jerseys to the side. In the traditional red and white they were sponsored Pat Moore and his Dairy Services Company. Pat was a co-founder of the club twenty four years ago and is still an active member of the clubs committee

UNSOCIAL BEHAVIOUR: Once the item concerned just indiscriminate dumping. It then extended to burglaries. It now includes what is locally seen as intimidation, when residents are being tormented by unwanted visitors in and around their own homes. During the week car trailers and lawn mowers were stolen from residences in the Coolagh, Windgap areas.

PLAYGROUND: Visiting the Playground for a routine visit was the Creative Play manager Christy Hanbury who constructed it. Christy is the father of John the Galway Senior Hurling fullback who played against Kilkenny in the Leinster Final. A native of Woodford the family play their club hurling for the city side Rahoon-Newcastle.

PLANNING APPLICATION: On Friday 10th July a planning application by Dunoair was lodged with Tipperary Co. Co. for a wind farm on the Carrigadoon and Curraghadobbin hills. It was posted in The Examiner newspaper on Monday 6th July and did appear in any local newspapers. In the new application the Wind Turbine located on top of the Hill Fort on Carraigadoon has been moved a short distance away whilst those on Curraghadobbin to have been moved lower down the slope towards Faugheen Village.

OPEN DAY: Following consultations with the Public held in the Carraig Hotel Dunoair had promised to hold an open day before lodging their amended application. The Company states they will not be hosting an Open Day because their clients are unable to come over to Ireland and the project has now entered the ‘statutory stage’.

QUESTIONS: The application is available on the Tipperary County council website and there is a five week widow from July 10th to lodge submissions. The application can also be see on the company website
www.carrigadoonwindpark.ie .The project team leader is Dan O’Boyle and the number for any queries is 021 4665911

MEETINGS: To discuss the development that could seriously impact on the area of high amenity value that includes the Knockroe Passage Tomb and the Western Ossory High Crosses a series of meetings have been held and are being arranged.
Representatives from the villages of Ahenny, Faugheen, Tullahought and Ballyneale under the umbrella group of Suir Valley Environmental Group met on Friday. Following it a meeting was held in Newtown School on Monday evening 20th.  An information Workshop will take place in Newtown School on Tuesday next 28th  July from 10am to 8pm. All are welcome

MOVING HOUSE: Local residents have found their perception of their place on the planet under two potential changes in recent days. Firstly the new Eircodes for postal deliveries has moved many of their residences and entire town’s lands into Tipperary. Elsewhere the new Department of the Environment proposals to the Boundary Commission are causing concern on the fringes of the county. Led by the Departments Minister Alan Kelly and Junior Ministers Paraic Coffey and Ann Phelan the proposals if passed would see parts of Kilkenny move into both Waterford and Carlow.
PARISH BULLETIN: Information for the parish bulletin at Sunday Masses can be emailed to
fearghus.ofearghail@dcu.ie or dropped into the Parochial House by Thursday evening

ONE WALL HANDBALL: Windgap Handball Club played host to the County One Wall Championships on Sunday last. The now annual one day event catered for ladies and gents and master’s grades. Commencing at ten in the morning the games took place on the two courts with the finals taking place around four o’clock. This year’s games attracted a new generation of players many of whom were making their debut in the One wall competitions. A feature of the day was the on-going barbecue and constant teas and refreshments provided by the ladies of the local club.  Results to appear in next week’s edition

TIDY TOWNS: Best wishes are extended to Paddy Egan who took a break from the building of the new wall in Tullahought recently. Work continued on the re-construction of the forge frontage when Dave Jackson and Shelia Cross joined the stone mason’s crew.

CAMOGIE NEWS: In the Senior Camogie All County League Windgap had a good game against with a home win against The Harps of Laois. Update from Tullahought Tidy Towns :

Planning application and Environmental Impact Statement-Non Technical.

"12.3.2 Operational Phase – Potential for Indirect Impacts The proposed turbines will be visible from the Knockroe passage tomb which is situated on a southfacing slope located approx. 2km to the north. A significant attribute of this Neolithic monument is its alignment with the setting sun on the Winter Solstice and this event has attracted large numbers of attendees in recent years. This astronomical alignment is centred towards the area where the sun sinks below the ridge line in the area of the proposed development site. The visual impact of the presence of turbine structures on or near this astronomical event will create a significant negative
visual impact on the National Monument.  The second passage tomb within the study area, located 2km to the west on Baunfree Hill, is not a
National Monument but it is listed in the Record of Monuments and Places. This Neolithic tomb has a recorded alignment towards a cairn monument on top of Slievenamon to the west and this sightline also extends across the proposed development site and the proposed development will also
have a significant negative visual impact on this visual alignment."
