Like pilgrims from the distant past, a great crowd assembled at the Knockroe ancient burial tomb this morning, for the Summer Solstice of 2014. Walking from all sides of the parish (with the particularly hardy crusaders making the long trip from Killamery) after an assembly in darkness. A crowd of around 110 bodies arrived at the Coshel, and were rewarded with a cup of tea, provided by Nicky Hawe. Thanks to Nicky and to those who provided the buns.
This mornings event triggered the start of the Windgap Summer Solstice festival, with the next event being the Barbecue in Powers of Tullahought tonight. Sports Day was held in Windagap NS on Thursday, 18th June in brilliant sunshine. All the pupils took part in a variety of sports with their team. Each team was captained by a 6th class pupil and was made up of children from every class in the school. Competition was close but when all the marks were totted up it was the Orange Team, captained by Lucy White, that was victorious and they were presented with the Zarah Whelan Memorial Cup. Every child in the school was awarded a certificate to mark their participation. Separately, in the hurling league final, the Red Team narrowly beat the Orange Team. Eleven pupils from Windgap NS took part in the gala for country schools in the Watershed, Kilkenny. They competed in front crawl, back crawl and breast stroke. There were several heats in all categories. Adam O'Shea and Emer Dunphy reached their finals & were just pipped at the end. Tara Hayes, Cliodhna O'Shea and Jack Doyle reached their semi-finals.
