From a family of fifteen, who all spent a time abroad and most stayed, the event marks another break with the past. It also highlights the great love of those who left, for their home place. ANNA (ANASTATIA) GRIFFIN; Anna Griffin a native of Kilmacoliver alias the main street in Tullahought died the Isle of Man on 28th August, 2012 at the age 86 years. Anna was the 8th of fifteen children of Tim (Timothy) and Nora Griffin. Her father was a native or Killorglin, in Co. Kerry and was a policeman with the Royal Irish Constabulary. He was stationed in the local R.I.C. Barracks in the Slatequarries when he met and married local girl Nora Carroll. Anna attended Kilmacoliver National School and then moved to the St. John of God Convent National School in Owning until the age of 14. In 1964 or 1965 Anna emigrated to the Isle of Man, where she worked in a hotel in Castletown where she met her life-long partner Billy Quale who predeceased her a number of years ago. Over the years Billy and Anna who lived outside Colby loved to return home regularly to see her family in Tullahought. On Wednesday the 30th August Anna’s ashes were brought home by her sister Agnes and were buried in her family grave. Those present included her sister Agnes, brothers Joseph and Gerald, her nephews, nieces, Fr. Nicholas Flavin who officiated at the ceremony, members of the Parish Church Choir and many neighbours and friends. With many of the extended family having met for the first time it was a real community occasion with teas in the Community Centre. COMMUNITY SHOP: Hopes to obtain a suitable ready made site to rent for the groundbreaking Community Shop and Tea Rooms central to all local amenities in Windgap village appear to have drawn a blank. Originally scheduled to be opened in conjunction with the commencement of the new school year it remains as the most important and most innovative and needed of the recent development proposals. HERITAGE PROTECTION: In a coming together of the communities of three separate villages the Faugheen Against Pylons, Ballyneale Environmental Action Group and Ahenny Action Group have formed a fundraising committee specifically to fight the threat of Wind Turbines on the hills Carraigadoon and Curraghdobbin above them. The new group is called the Heritage Protection Group. The first fundraiser is a Cake Sale on November 2nd in the Clubhouse in Faugheen after 10 am Mass. SHOOTING SEASON: November 1st marks the commencement of the Cock Pheasant Shooting season for the forty game clubs in the county affiliated with the National Association of Regional Game Councils. Located in almost every parish, the main aims of the clubs are wildlife conservation, insurance protection for members and landowners and the retention of habitat. Unfortunately the ongoing loss of habitat, no observance of game sanctuary signage, very limited interaction with local landowners as to club members or the protection of the wildlife area lake created by the local award winning Tidy Towns committee has seen the local game birds mainly associated with residences, gardens, orchards and farmyards. The joy of having the first clutch of wild ducklings hatched on the amenity area earlier in the year was short lived.
