On the day the Full Irish will be provided in the Community Centre from 9.30 to 11.30am. In aid of Community Projects and the provision of tables for the Community, tickets cost €10 for adults and €3 for juveniles and advance booking is recommended. All interested in assisting in any way are invited to attend.
LEAGUE FINAL: If you are on the road from anywhere in the county to the Ennis Road grounds in Limerick for the Allianz National Hurling league semi final, the early timing of the breakfast will ensure all travellers are well fortified for the day’s journey. If the match is not your cup of tea for the day, why not drop in and enjoy a Windgap Fry at your leisure. TIDY UP: Eight thirty on Saturday morning saw the commencement of the annual clean up of over twelve kilometres of roadway around Tullahought. Carried out by local residents, the results continued to amaze everyone involved, on how dirty a nation we are. Amongst the array of items found were carpets and couches, toasters, heaters, vacuum cleaners and even a George Foreman sandwich maker. Whilst they were the larger items, the most numerous by a distance were soft drinks containers, alcohol cans and fast food wrappers. Also amongst the rubbish that had mostly gathered since the end of the last Tidy Towns season in September were old newspapers, plastic pint glasses and drinks glasses. Other items included Hamlet mini cigar tins and nappies. Another mystery was the amount of hot drinks containers that appeared on Skough Hill. Amongst the nicer items found were traditional glass milk bottles at two separate locations bearing the original printed lettering. The details on them read "Ardboy Dairy Pasteurised Milk, James Tynan & Son" the remaining script on the 1 Pint, 568 ML bottle stated "Please Rinse and Return". Other milk bottles found read "Kilkenny Creamery Pasteurised Milk” with its “Trade Mark symbol” and a cartoon style drawing of a cow. Their presence gave further credence that dumping and the rubbish left never goes away as one of the companies that supplied them was founded in 19977. Amongst the clean up crews of all age groups on the day were by numerical strength Doyle’s, Walsh’s, O’Shea’s, Graces, Egan’s, Norris’s, Phelans and Powers. The tidy up came to a close shortly before five o'clock. Oblivious to the work of the volunteers, passers by had discarded the unopened supplements from the Sunday newspapers on the main road between Billy Hawes Cross and the Slatequarries early the following morning. Elsewhere the Kilmacoliver Loop one of the most popular of the Kilkenny walking trails has been closed. HURLING NEWS: Windgap travelled to Callan on Saturday evening to play the home side in a Town V's Country derby in the Junior League Championship in John Locke Park. After good early season preparation hopes were high that a repeat of the victory of 2013 could be on the cards against the largest town in the county excluding its rural population. However events in the preceding days saw the local side short three of its back division as a result of early season breaks and participation in International charity Work in Kenya. In the game playing against a strong early wind the home side opened the scoring. Having caught up Windgap went on to lead before the game was tied 0-3 at the end of the first quarter. Whilst the play was even steven, an inability to convert possession eventually saw the Lockes go four points ahead. A Windgap rally had the score reduced to 0-7 to 0-5 after twenty five minutes and they went in 0-9 to 0-6 down at the break. The second half saw a superb show by the home side that was assisted by the injury loss of Conor Lonergan and Tommy Fleming. In a fine run they extended the lead to 2-15 to 0-6 before Jim Fitzgerald called time with the scoreboard reading 2-17 to 0-8. On the day the last line of defence of Peter Landy, Shane Walsh and Paraic Walsh held sway until they were overrun with two late goals. Elsewhere Emmet Landy and William Phelan defended well whilst Eoin Cody battled well up front. See Barry Henriques match report in the Sports Pages. CAMOGIE NEWS: "Nothing ventured, nothing gained" was the motto of the Camogie Clubs first big weekend of the new season as they set out with a novel event in a saturated fundraising era in the parish and also commenced the new season at senior level. Playing Dicksboro in Palmerstown on Sunday morning the side looked rusty following the non event of a same day walkover from Freshford the previous weekend. As a result they were quickly 1-3 to nil behind a wind assisted home side. Following a rally with a Niamh Phelan goal and a Denise Gaule point the side were struck for two simply worked goals and found their selves 3-3 to 1-3 behind at the break. On the resumption the side slowly battled back into the game and it looked like the impossible was on the cards when the score read 3-6 to 1-8. However the forward push was halted by a goal from a free. The score saw the home side settle and go on to record a 4-8 to 2-9 win. Showing many changes from last year the team showed good fitness levels. The side under mentors new Mike Wall, Liam Moriarity and John Bergin were well served by Joanne Cody, Denise Gaule and Phena Heffernan. The side was Laura Walker, Julie Walsh, Catherine Foley, Eimear Moylan, Ciara Molloy, Phena Heffernan, Aisling Cody, Terri Mackey, Deirdre Purcell, Joanne Cody, Anne-Marie Phelan, Denise Gaule, Jane Walker, Niamh Bambrick, and Niamh Phelan. The game was refereed by Conor Everard TWEETING: The weekend Junior Hurling and Senior Camogie championship ties were covered score by score by Julie Walsh in Callan and Margaret Purcell in Palmerstown.
