Junior Club kicked off last Friday with an Easter Egg Hunt ! Lucklily the Easter Bunnies foresaw the perfect weather conditions and hid their eggs outside in the vicinity of the walkway behind the lake. There werent any eggs left behind once our troops were finished. There was lots of chocolate all round ! Well done to the junior leaders who put alot of hard work in to planning the hunt ! Back at the hall we played some easter themed games such as boiled egg hockey !! The poor eggs ! Sontae Jackson was the lucky member who guessed the number of mini chocolate eggs in the jar ..... well done Sontae .. hope you enjoyed them We then had a visit from Joseph Kennedy and his friend Kieran. The guys explained and showed the kids two types of martial arts... Akido and Kenjutsu. They were very impressive and invited the children to participate with them. We would like to thank Joseph and Kieran for their time and thank Liz for organising. Finally..... Junior Club returns on Friday 2nd May.... Please ensure children return with their consent forms they were given at club regarding our forthcoming trip to the Watershed. We hope all our members and their families have a lovely Easter and enjoy their break. ALL ABOUT WINDGAP: Visitors to Windgap in recent times have been amazed at the tidiness and neatness of the streetscape of the upper and lower village. After the winter storms that left the nations landscape littered with debris, not a spec of litter or twigs from trees is now to be seen. The transformation is thanks to local resident Dermot Houlihan a member of the Windgap Community Development Tús scheme who has turned the village into a picture postcard scene of weed free footpaths, tidy grass margins and neatly cut hedges. As part of the improvements Dermot carried out a clean up of the area starting in the village and going clockwise via Robinsons Hill and the Glen that yielded over twenty bags of litter. It also uncovered a fly dumping blackspot near the site of the original creamery in the Glen. A man with a myriad of ideas to enhance the village Dermot was part of the work crew on Saturday week that planted new trees on the Carrick road. Currently rebuilding a wall close to the lake Dermot’s long term plans include the provision of picnic tables around the lake and walkway. In the upper village the rebuilding of the forge frontage with the iconic horseshoe shaped cut stone doorway at the crossroads is also on the list. For his dedication Dermot’s interest and efforts were described by a twenty something local as been "All about Windgap" as his Pride of Place in his locality also sees him act as an umpire for many of the camogie and hurling games in the local pitch and also assist with parking at all of the community events in the parish. Dermot’s ongoing work, which extends way beyond the required hours, follows the provision of the amenity walk, the restoration of the lake and Grotto and the weekend celebration of the gathering and it has further raised the spirits of the entire community. Building on the current work the provision of a playground is the next priority. The Tús scheme lasts for just one year, so, next time you are passing through and notice the transformation and would like to assist in any way, talk to Dermot or one of the team of supporting volunteers. As a result of Dermot’s efforts and achievements, forward now is the only way to go, as once more, its All about further enhancing Windgap! LEAGUE DEBUT: The JJ Kavanagh All County Hurling League tie played in atrocious weather conditions on Saturday week in Windgap was a well contested affair between old rivals Kilmacow and Windgap. Having seen the visitors open the scoring, the sides were tied at 0-2 before with Cian Ryan and Tommy Lonergan with two points in a row and another brace after a Kilmacow reply saw them lead 0-6 to 0-4 at the break. On the resumption the wind and rain assisted visitors reduced the lead before Cian Ryan with his sixth pointed free had his side 0-7 to 0-4 ahead. Six minutes into the new half the games turning point arrived when Johnny Hayes gave James Murray no chance in the Windgap goal to tie the sides 0-7 to 1-4. After the sides were again tied Kilmacow took the lead for the second time in the game after a fifty minute break. The visitors then added another to extend it to two points for the first time. After another Windgap reply a single point separated the sides with five minutes.
