
McCarthy Cup photos to follow had a busy weekend
CARD DRIVE: The monthly Progressive Twenty Five Card Drive in aid of Windgap Hurling Club resumes in Guinans Bar and Lounge in Windgap on Friday 14th of November at 9.00pm. All are welcome.
HANDBALL AGM: In his annual report secretary Michael O'Shea congratulated all the handball players who participated in the 2013 Competitions ranging from U10 to Masters. The competitions included Cumann na mBunscoil, Leinster Championships, College Championships, Inter-varsities, One wall, , Tournaments and All Ireland Finals. In them members won County, Leinster, and All Ireland Titles. In addition the club hosted the County one wall competition for their sixth year where a girls section was added to events where it was a huge success. A registration night was very successful and the club gained new members. A number of club members took part in a code of ethics training course. Michael also noted it was our first year in the last eight years that the club did not have a Feile team
ALLEY IMPROVEMENTS; Improvements during the year included the painting of alley, installing a new meter, carrying out landscaping at the rear of alley and the cleaning of concrete area. Ger Doyle was complimented for all the good work he is doing with the county website and his work as club chairman. Also thanked was Treasurer Michael Grace for putting up weekly time sheets and looking after all the financial matters. Thanks was extended to all the members who gave their time to coaching the juveniles over the past year. The rewards were evident he was glad to say with the number of titles the juveniles have won and by the number of players who have represented Kilkenny and it showed that coaching is paying off. Michael also thanked all who assisted the club in various ways over the past year – making buns & sandwiches, catering for events, and carrying out maintenance work, Officers for 2014 are Chairman: Ger Doyle, Vice Chairman: Jimmy Purcell, Secretary Michael O'Shea, Treasurer Michael Grace.
IRISH NATIONALS: Windgap will be hosting some of the games in the adult 40x20 Handball Nationals this weekend. They join clubs in Kilkenny, Carlow and Laois in doing so. Being played locally are the Golden Masters B Singles Golden Master A singles Final, Golden Master B Singles Final and the Emerald Masters Final Venue: The games commence on Saturday 15th November at 10am. Amongst the players to be seen are Michael Ducksy Walsh and players from Mayo, Wexford and Kerry. The club is represented in the Golden Masters B Singles Quarter Finals on Saturday by Eamonn Purcell who competes with players from Mayo, Armagh, Monaghan, Armagh and Down. Other competitors due in various other adult grades in Windgap on Sunday Morning are from Kildare, Clare, Cork, Wexford, Limerick and Wicklow.
TRACTOR RUN: The annual tractor run for school funds has been confirmed for Saturday 15th November at midday. The McCarty Cup will be present for part of the time.
BRIDGE: Winners at the weekly game at the Bridge Club in Killamery were 1st. Noreen Keneally and Rita Houlihan, 2nd Mary Lonregan and Mary Walsh, 3rd. Pat Arrigan and Peggy Vaughan. Best Gross Kathleen O’Shea and Helen Lanigan
CAMOGIE: On Sunday morning the under twenty ones recorded a good championship win over Mooncoin in Mooncoin. They now play Danesfort in the "B" semi final on Sunday next.
PIONEER SOCIAL: The annual South Ossory Pioneer Social takes place in the Rhu Glen on Friday 14th of November. All members eligible for Gold or Silver pins are invited to contact their local branch members.
DIFFERENT WORLD: Three hundred and fifty second level students with just three teachers consisting of one retired engineer and two Leaving Cert students with no books, no desks whilst sitting on the floor in Africa was the story that Fr. Sean McDermot from Leitrim spoke of at the weekend Masses in the parish on Sunday last. A member of the VMM Voluntary Missionary Movement that works with volunteers to work alongside local communities to help overcome the causes of poverty oppression and injustice through learning.
MCCARTHY CUP VISIT: The McCarthy Cup is scheduled to visit Windgap School on Friday 14th of November.
