DEFRIBILATOR NEWS: In the past year the local committee have planed for, fundraised and purchased three defibrillators and specialised boxes to house them outdoors in all weather conditions. They have been installed in the following locations: On the wall at the door to the left, at the top of the long steps at Windgap National School. On the front porch of the Parochial House in Windgap Village and on the front wall of Tullahought Community Centre. In addition AED Training has been provided for forty-seven people from the locality. As a result it has been decided to hold two Annual Cake and Home Produce Sales as a means of funding on-going training, maintenance and the erection of permanent signage etc. The first sale took place on Friday 2nd August after the Cemetery Mass in Windgap. The second Cake and Home Produce Sale will be held in Tullahought at a later date after a Sunday morning Mass.
CEMETERY MASSES: In the past week the annual graveyard Masses took place on a damp evening in Killamery Cemetery on Wednesday evening, indoors in Tullahought Church on Thursday and in brilliant weather conditions in Windgap Cemetery on Friday 2nd August. The masses were celebrated by Fr. Nicholas Flavin with the parish choir and musicians participating at all of the locations. The final mass of the group takes place in the Slateyard in the Slatequarries on Friday next 9th August at 7.30pm.
CAKE SALE: The defibrillator committee sincerely thank all who supported the fund-raiser by bringing cakes, home produce (jams, vegetables, etc) and by making donations to the fund after the cemetery mass in Windgap on Friday evening. The total raised was €841. 44.
COMMUNITY PLAYGROUND: Highest on the community agenda at the moment is the availability of a strip of unused Parish ground as a site for a community playground. Ideally located, it is just an arms length from the local National School on the western side and the width of the road from the Parish Hall and the Handball, Racquetball and Badminton courts on the Southern side. To the east it is the thickness of a chainlink fence from the tennis and former basketball court whilst a wooden post and rail fence marks its distance from the Hurling, Camogie and Football playing facilities and also the outdoor handball courts. Adjacent to it, is the landscaped amenity area, a six hundred metre walkway and the manicured grounds and mature trees surrounding the local lake. In addition to the site, which has been described by visitors with potential grant aiding funding as the most suitable to be seen, is the ample car parking that is already in place. Following a survey through the local National School that yielded a very positive outcome, the project is being driven by a new generation of young parents anxious to enhance the area and provide additional facilities for the community and its youth at no cost to the Parish.
LOTTO: This Weeks Winning Numbers were 2, 5, 11, 14 and Bonus 17. Next weeks Prize fund is €6,350. Recent winners were Kathleen Egan, Rachel Phelan and Sharon Power.
LOCAL ELECTIONS: Following the proposed boundary changes and the possible retirement of the majority of the sitting councillors it is believed a number of residents of the parish are considering standing for some of the vacant positions. Following the success of the recent Gathering Events the possibilities include community candidates running for the present Parties or as an Independent candidate in the area for the first time in an era.
TIDY TOWNS: Work continued in the village with the re-building of the wall behind the flowerbed at the cross.
CLUB NEWS: In the under fourteen hurling shield final the local side went down to the Fenians in Johns Park recently.
JUNIORS WIN AGAIN: Entering the knockout stages of the Junior championship Windgap received a huge boost when the accounted for their neighbours John Lockes in the final league tie in Windgap on Friday evening week. Behind entering the final minutes a late rally saw them record a 1-13 to 2-9 win over their more experienced neighbours who had just returned from the Intermediate Grade. Whilst the result will make no difference to the sides first round draw against Cloneen the morale booster should give the side great belief for a good championship run. Over the weekend the side played Mooncoin in the first round of the Southern Junior championship in Mooncoin. Leading 1-7 to 0-7 at the break the side saw themselves level in the 14th and 24th minutes before two late points gave them a 1-13 to 0-14 victory. The result qualifies them for the semi-final where they play the winners of John Lockes and Piltown in a local derby tie.
OUT AND ABOUT: Early mornings see a family of leverets appear on a nearby slope where their first footsteps of the new dawn are taken so daintily and softly as if they feared damaging the soft cover of overnight dew on the grass. In the bright sunshine they are oblivious to the possible dangers of the constant shadows that flash along the ground from house martins feeding overhead and larger birds on the wing. Close by a family of Jackdaws work together learning the methods of searching for their food requirements whilst the local pheasant families all appear to have just two chicks this year.
CREAMERY RENOVATIONS: Amongst the items missed from the recent Planning for the Future Reports were the planned renovations to the local creamery. Following communications with the local council and the owners, on the deteriorating state of the preserved and listed building some progress has been reported. Located on the Carrick to Callan Road the unique structure appears to be the only major building of note in the village, to passers by who are unaware of the upper village and its other hidden gems. The next meeting of the Development Group will be on Tuesday 27th August.

CAMOGIE: In the League the seniors had a fine win over Lisdowney in Tullaroan and now play Muckalee in the semi final in Windgap on Monday evening.
ONE WALL CHAMPIONSHIPS: Windgap Handball Club hosted one the County One Wall competition on Sunday last when the lovely weather brought out a large crowd. On the day five separate grades were contested with a total of 25 participants. In Men's Open the participants were Ciaran Neary, Dan Breen, Fergal Lalor, John O Neill, Philly Lonergan and PJ O Brien. In Masters "A" Grade they included Eamon and Jimmy Purcell, Paul Dowling and Tom O Keeffe Michael O Shea, Eddie English, Michael Dalton and Simon Walsh in the Masters B Grade. At Juvenile level the under seventeen's were Darragh O Shea, Mark Dowling, Padraig Cooney and JJ English. Whilst the under fifteens included Aoife Holden, Dearbhail O Keeffe, Ciaran Cooney, Robert Dowling, David Doyle, James Culleton and Pat Grace. For some it was the first time to play one wall but all the competitors provided some very entertaining games. Before the finals took part we were entertained with a girls under eleven-exhibition game between Roisin O Keeffe, Kilfane and Noelle Dowling, Mothel with Roisin O Keeffe winning 13-10. All five finals were played with great spirit and displayed some great handball. The results were: Men's Open Final Ciaran Neary Talbot’s Inch defeated Dan Breen Kells 26-19. Masters A final Jimmy Purcell Windgap defeated Tom O Keeffe Kilfane 18-5. Masters B Final Eddie English Goresbridge defeated Simon Walsh Windgap 19-8. Juvenile u17 final Padraig Cooney Clogh defeated JJ English Goresbridge 19-6. Juvenile U15 final Aoife Holden Kilfane defeated Ciaran Cooney Clogh 13-11. POC FADA: As part of the Kilmoganny Parish Gathering on Sunday 4th August 2013 a Poc Fada will take place from Baurscoob Cross to Kilmoganny. This is a fun event with Novelty Games and a great fun element along the route. The first team will start at 11-30am and the event will conclude at 3pm. Entry fee (for team of 3) is €20 with Prizes for various categories. All variety of Camogie/Hurling/Family Teams are Welcome and refreshments will be provided.
