Boxing-On Saturday at the National Stadium on the south Circular road in Drimnagh and in Kilmanagh locals representing the newest and oldest sports in the area, all stared looking down into an unknown abyss. Four points to one down after the opening round of the National Senior Ladies Welterweight final Clare Grace and her coach Jimmy Walsh faced a daunting uphill battle in her bid to retain her National title. So too, did the clubs footballers earlier in the day as they struggled to field a side just to remain in this year’s competition after almost one hundred and twenty years participation in the big ball code. At the ringside the Callan partnership faced the title holder of two years ago Ban Garda Laoise Traynor from the Bray renowned Katie Taylor club who had the renowned Olympic Gold medal winning coach Pete Taylor in her corner. However somehow the wily octogenarian corner man and his prodigy amalgamated their blend of experience and youth as Clare battled back to lead six five at the end of the second round. In the crucial third round a scintillating performance saw Clare stamp her authority on the tie and extend her lead to11-6 lead. In the final fourth two minute round Clare went on to retain her title with a 15-8 victory. Boxing out of the Callan club Clare was also supported at the finals by club trainer John Hickey, family members and friends. On Friday evening Clare who trains in St. Saviours in Dublin during the week defeated Holy family boxer from Belfast in the semi Finals. In Kilmanagh the battle was now on for the pride of the club jersey rather than victory, as a clarion call was made to increase the starting line up of thirteen to enable the game to continue in the second half. With intercounty player Aidan Mackey at the helm and resources scarce and scattered, they were joined by club stalwart and former senior club and intercounty playing star Pat Walsh and Shamie Hennessey a member of the 2007 Féile team. Just two points down at half time the side that saw Johnny Fleming, Edward Cunningham and Tom Egan also making a return to the playing fields found the home side too strong in the second half. Having lined out with his son Paraic on a field of play for the first time, it was recalled elsewhere that his last football game was in similar circumstances when the side eventually went on to win the Junior A county title in 2004. On the occasion he rallied to the club cause along with Aidan Phelan to make up a side to play Slieverue in the first round and then stood back to see the little acorn go on to grow into a county title win in Nowlan Park. The side on Saturday was Tom Egan, Paraic Walsh, Shane Walsh, Edward Cunningham, Michael Power, PJ O’Keeffe, Peter Landy, Aidan Mackey, Cian Ryan, Gary Lyons, James Murray, Johnny Fleming, Philly Lonergan, Pat Walsh, Seamie Hennessy. The next game will be against Railyard in the semi final in two weeks time.
