Nicknamed Katmandu from the popular tragic love poem of the time written by J Milton Keynes about the time when the British Raj were in India and Nepal, It read........
There's a one-eyed yellow idol to the north of Khatmandu,
There's a little marble cross below the town;
There's a broken-hearted woman tends the grave of Mad Carew,
And the Yellow God forever gazes down.
In its local context, it was always suspected there was a meeting house in the area and despite extensive searches it remained elusive and acted as a safe house and meeting place that saw Eamon De Valera, Frank Aiken and Tom Barry being amongst the many who were thankfull for its safety.
CROSS BORDER MEETING: Following the publication of The Draft Tipperary Renewable Energy Strategy the local community and residents on both sides of the Kilkenny, Tipperary border are invited to a public meeting in Newtown School on Wednesday 4th May at 8pm.
It arises, as a result of the new proposal that the northern side of Carrigadoon Hill overlooking the villages of Ahenny, Windgap, Lamogue and Tullahought which has been zoned unsuitable for Turbines since 2006 would have its classification changed and will once again be open for Wind Turbine development. The timing removes the new focus of the area and the Leader Imitative to have the Lingaun Valley included and its historical sites as a key part in Bord Failte's new "Irelands Ancient East" initiative. The proposed area covers the wooded hillside of Carrigadoon over Ahenny and follows the ridge to include Clashnasmuth, Curaheen, and Rathclarish that looks directly across the river at the opposite slopes that are protected in the Kilkenny Development plan and would also be impacted by this development
The Tipperary Co. Co. Draft Renewable Energy Strategy can be viewed in their Clonmel and Nenagh offices and is also available on the Council website. The meeting is being co-ordinated by the Ahenny Action Group, Coshel Conservation Group, Suir Valley Environmental Group, Faugheen against Pylons, Ballyneale Environmental Groups. The closing date for making submissions is 23rd May 2016.

Nicknamed Katmandu from the popular tragic love poem of the time written by J Milton Keynes about the time when the British Raj were in India and Nepal, it read……..

TIMES PAST: Amongst the equipment and paraphernalia of the era supplied by relations, historians and the pupils of Windgap School were lists of names of the families covering almost every townsland that were associated with the activities of the time. Adding interest were the names of those whose “bands of marriage were announced” and those who were born and wed with their sponsors and witnesses along with those who died and attended school in 1916. The historical event was organised by Kate Moloney and Noreen Hayes who provided welcome refreshments to all of the visitors.
