BIG WEEKEND IN THE AREA: The knockout stages of the County Championship saw the Junior Hurlers caused a surprise in some areas with a fine win in Tullaroan, the Camogie side’s on-going progress saw them reach the Senior Semi-Final. Elsewhere the announcement of the National Super Valu Tidy Towns results where Windgap made a welcome and impressive return after years whilst Tullahought extended their bronze medal run to four.
TIDY TOWNS SUCCESS’S: In the Annual Report of the Super Valu Tidy Towns at the Helix Theatre in Dublin both local Windgap and Tullahought villages were lauded amongst the twenty two Kilkenny and eight hundred and sixty two entries nationwide. In the adjudicators individual reports it was stated “Tullahought is a charming traditional Irish rural village with a fascinating heritage, one of a few of its kind left in the country. It has been many years since your adjudicator's last visit to Tullahought and it was a pleasure to note that the village is as charming as ever with the addition of fine new amenity features for the benefit of the community and visitors”. In adjudicators comments in Windgap it was stated “It has been too long since Windgap last participated your adjudicator enjoyed the visit to your charming village. Windgap is a lovely village with some charming amenity developments and wildlife amenity features and opportunities for children”. Amongst the highlights found in Windgap were “Windgap’s lake and woodland amenity area together with children’s playground are enviable attractions that many communities would love to have. Whilst in Tullahought “Congratulations were paid on the Quern Stones sculpture”. Further details on the reports to follow in the coming weeks.
BIG WIN IN TULLAROAN: In the first round of the Junior Hurling championship played in Tullaroan on Saturday afternoon Windgap recorded a fine win over their sister club Galmoy by 1-14 to 1-12 having led by 1-7 to 0-7 at the break. OFF TO BALLYHALE: In the Junior Hurling Championship quarter final Windgap were drawn to play Glenmore with the game fixed for Ballyhale on Saturday evening next at 4pm. The draw sees the locals draw the league table toppers and championship favourites. Having defeated the table toppers in the second group at the weekend an enthralling tie is in offing.
CAMOGIE NEWS: In the County Senior Semi-Final Mullinavat provided the opposition in Ballyhale on Sunday morning. Played in front of a fine crowd the side was 1-6 to 0-8 at half time before the former county champions went on to reverse the league result to win by 3-15 to 1-14. POWER OUTAGE: Upgrading of the E.S.B. Network sees a major part of the area without power on Monday and Tuesday during the week.
AUTUMUNAL DAYS: The sound of the pack of Kilmoganny harriers based in Castletown on a light southerly breeze on Saturday morning week was another mark of the march of the seasons. As if in anticipation of their forthcoming days of cub and fox hunting they sang in unison of the freedom to join the chase. Elsewhere a brace of combines worked late on the high ground over Lamogue as the patch work of richly coloured cornfields was being converted to stubble lined with rows of thrashed straw. Around them, the linear hedgerows were slowly turning from luscious green, to slight hues of yellow and amber as they started on their way to their autumnal blaze of glory. Under the new harvest moon and cooler evenings their journey to their stark barren look of winter had begun in earnest. Along them finches were travelling in flocks making a colourful and song filled sight as they delicately, balanced and fed on the seed heads of the many plants. On the ground a clutch of young still flightless pheasants scurried for the cover of the nearest ditch when disturbed. Over the weekend as the plentifullness of the harvest was celebrated by displays in the Churches, the sports fields saw the business end of the Club Season in all disciplines get into full swing. All across the country, teams honed their skills for the long awaited knock out, sudden death, winner only to progress games. With the All-Ireland Senor Hurling title safely secured by the magnificent county squad and management team, spectators travelled from venue to venue to watch the current stars, whilst keeping one eye out for new ones for the future.
